Working with Saturn: Embracing the Archetype

The world of spirit doesn’t speak with words but with symbols. Symbols are inherently mysterious; their meanings are both veiled and illuminated through our creative work. Symbols can be sensory or supernatural, they can represent objects, names, colors, or a direction on a compass. Sometimes, we refer to symbols as correspondences. The mythologist Heinrich Zimmer described symbols as words and concepts, “just as visions, rituals, and images are; so too are the manners and customs of daily life. Through all of these, a transcendent reality is mirrored."

This January, join us as we illuminate the archetype of Saturn and his symbols! In Roman mythology, Saturn is a Titan of time, agriculture, endings, and cosmic possibility. With a scythe in hand and an hourglass in the other, Saturn is the winged Sun of Night. He is chthonic and lunar, and plagued by an insatiable appetite for the living. During the dark months, the god becomes the Lord of Chaos and Misrule for his annual festival, Saturnalia. Enrobed in the myths of the Underworld, Saturn speaks of sacrifice and renewal, introduces us to his sacred symbols, and guides us through a winter writing ritual.
